{"id":3938,"date":"2015-10-05T16:09:00","date_gmt":"2015-10-05T14:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.dignitas.bertastrasse1.ch\/news\/on-5-october-2015-governor\/"},"modified":"2024-06-11T15:15:55","modified_gmt":"2024-06-11T13:15:55","slug":"california-governor-signs-end-of-life-option-act","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/dev.dignitas.bertastrasse1.ch\/en\/news\/california-governor-signs-end-of-life-option-act\/","title":{"rendered":"California (USA): Governor signs End of Life Option Act"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">21 January 2015 \/ 4 June 2015 \/ 4 + 11 September 2015 \/ 5 October 2015<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Californian State Senators Lois Wolk, Bill Monning and others, backed by Brittany Maynard\u2019 family, introduced the \u2018End of Life Option Act: modelled after the 1997 Oregon Dying with Dignity Act, the Bill would give a terminally ill, mentally competent adult resident in California, the right to ask and receive from his or her physician a prescription for a lethal drug to end his or her suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201520160SB128&amp;search_keywords=End+of+Life+Options+Act%23%23%23null%23%23%23null%23%23%23null%23%23%23null%23%23%23null\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Senate Bill SB-128 End of Life<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #333333;\">(Link to California Legislative Information) <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.compassionandchoices.org\/2015\/06\/04\/california-senate-passes-first-medical-aid-in-dying-bill-in-ca-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">On 4 June 2015, the<\/span> <strong>Californian Senate passed the End of Life Option Act<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #333333;\">(SB 128) by 23 to 14 votes. The Bill thus moves on to a Commitee of the Californian House of Representatives (Link)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">On 2 September 2015, the Public Health and Developmental Services Committee of the California Assembly approved of the California End of Life Option Act by 10 : 3 votes, and two days later the Assembly Finance Commitee by 5 : 3 votes. In a next step, the bill will be voted on by both houses of the California Legislature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">On 11 September, the End of Life Option Act (SB 128) was approved by 23 : 14 votes of the Senators after it was approved by 43 : 34 votes in the Assembly. The Bill only needs one more step which is the signature of Governor Jerry Brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Speech by Debby Ziegler, mother of Brittany Maynard who had to move from California to Oregon in order to make use of her right to end her suffering self-determinedly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Debbie Ziegler\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/i1u37m1C-yc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">On 5 October 2015, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr., a Catholic and former Jesuit seminarian, signed the End of Life Option Act. &#8220;I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill. And I wouldn&#8217;t deny that right to others.&#8221; he wrote in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/docs\/ABX2_15_Signing_Message.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signing message<\/a>. Thus, California becomes a further US-State in which terminally ill have freedom of choice to self-determinedly end their suffering with physician\u2019s assessment and prescription of medication.
