{"id":6211,"date":"2024-03-22T15:52:48","date_gmt":"2024-03-22T14:52:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.dignitas.bertastrasse1.ch\/news\/developments-in-legalising-assisted-dying-on-the-island-of-jersey\/"},"modified":"2024-03-22T15:52:48","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T14:52:48","slug":"developments-in-legalising-assisted-dying-on-the-island-of-jersey","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/dev.dignitas.bertastrasse1.ch\/en\/news\/developments-in-legalising-assisted-dying-on-the-island-of-jersey\/","title":{"rendered":"Developments in legalising assisted dying on the Island of Jersey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Developments in legalising assisted dying on the Island of Jersey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>22 March 2024  \/  11 January 2023  \/  5 May 2022<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On 22 March 2024, detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.je\/Caring\/AssistedDying\/Pages\/AssistedDying.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">assisted dying proposals (p.18-2024)<\/a> have been presented to the States Assembly by the Council of Ministers<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.je\/Caring\/AssistedDying\/Pages\/PublicEngagementSummaryReportAssistedDying.aspx\/\" target=\"_blank\">Public engagement summary report<\/a> providing detail on the first phase of public engagement on assisted dying in Jersey has been published.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On 22 June 2021, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.je\/Caring\/AssistedDying\/Pages\/CitizensJuryOnAssistedDying.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Jersey Assisted Dying Citizens\u2019 Jury<\/a>, established in Spring 2021, published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.je\/Government\/Pages\/StatesReports.aspx?ReportID=5433\" target=\"_blank\">Initial Report<\/a> which notes recommendations and key messages from Jurors regarding   \u201cShould assisted dying be permitted in Jersey, and if so, under what   circumstances?\u201d In the final vote, a large majority of the Jury voted in   favour of assisted dying. The issue is set to be put to States Members   later this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Jury\u2019s work and report is a further step towards a possible legalisation of assisted dying. The background is the 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bailiwickexpress.com\/jsy\/news\/jersey-woman-mounts-dignity-dying-campaign-after-mums-terminal-diagnosis\/\" target=\"_blank\">launch of a campaign by Tanya Tupper<\/a> whose mother planned to end her suffering at Dignitas, a petition, establishing the group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/endoflifechoicesjersey\" target=\"_blank\">End of Life Choice Jersey<\/a>, research results showing <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.dignitas.bertastrasse1.ch\/images\/stories\/pdf\/umfrage-eolcjersey-4insight-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">doctor\u2019s support<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.dignitas.bertastrasse1.ch\/images\/stories\/pdf\/umfrage-eolcjersey-4insight.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">public support<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.dignitas.bertastrasse1.ch\/images\/stories\/pdf\/diginpublic\/referat-jersey-11092019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">public debate involving Dignitas<\/a>, another Islander, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bailiwickexpress.com\/jsy\/news\/jerseyman-place-dignitas-hopes-island-will-allow-assisted-dying\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alain de Chemin<\/a>, planning to go to Dignitas and campaigning for legalisation, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Government of Jersey did a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.je\/Government\/Consultations\/Pages\/AssistedDying.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">public consultation to set out the plans for an assisted dying service<\/a>, accompanied by the publication of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.je\/SiteCollectionDocuments\/Health%20and%20wellbeing\/Assisted%20Dying%20Consultation%20Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">consultation report<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.dignitas.bertastrasse1.ch\/images\/stories\/pdf\/diginpublic\/stellungnahme-submission-ads-jersey-11012023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Dignitas \u2013 To live with dignity \u2013 To die with dignity handed in submission<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Developments in legalising assisted dying on the Island of Jersey 22 March 2024 \/ 11 January 2023 \/ 5 May 2022 On 22 March 2024, detailed assisted dying proposals (p.18-2024) have been presented to the States Assembly by the Council of Ministers A Public engagement summary report providing detail on the first phase of public [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","tags":[],"class_list":["post-6211","news","type-news","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dev.dignitas.bertastrasse1.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/6211","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dev.dignitas.bertastrasse1.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dev.dignitas.bertastrasse1.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dev.dignitas.bertastrasse1.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6211"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dev.dignitas.bertastrasse1.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6211"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
